The National Museum is the oldest scientific institution and one of the most important museums in Brazil. Situated in Quinta da Boa Vista, a former imperial residence, and until 2018, it was one of the largest natural history and anthropology museums in the Americas (the year it celebrated its 200th anniversary and suffered extensive damage from a devastating fire). Prior to the fire, the museum housed a vast collection of scientific and historical artifacts, including the largest collection of natural history in Latin America. Its halls displayed dinosaur fossils, indigenous artifacts, Egyptian mummies, historical paintings, and much more.

While awaiting the completion of restoration works and the reopening of its doors, the National Museum, affiliated with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), offers visits and temporary exhibitions showcasing the recovered artifacts after the fire.

Opening hours: Until the completion of renovations, it is necessary to check the museum’s website for any temporary exhibitions along with their schedules.

Ticket price: Confirmation is required based on the availability of temporary exhibitions.
